Sitting in a theater where Charlie Chaplin, Harold Lloyd, Hal Roach, Buster Keaton and Harpo Marx sat watching their own comedy gems with William Randolph Hearst and his love, Marion Davies can only get better sitting in that theater with my gal. On our recent trip to the The Enchanted Hill we took the CA State Park’s Grand Rooms Tour that takes you through the estate and gives you a one reeler of archival footage of the castle during the 1920’s and 1930’s in the theater itself.
Hearst frequently showed his own films that he produced and starred Marion Davies but our tour guide told us that he often has films flown in from studios to show them there. I guess that’s what you get when invite studio moguls Jack Warner and Irving Thalberg to your home. I would have loved to sit in there and watch one of Chaplin’s films, maybe my personal favorite “City Lights”. I hope you enjoy the few shots I was able to take of the art deco theater before they ran me out, they give you a short amount of time in that room for photos.
